Tip: Bananas Prevent Cramping

By Adam Soldinger • Jan 24th, 2008 • Category: Tips

If you ride hard, try eating a banana (or 2) for breakfast or during the day. Muscle cramps are usually caused by a potassium deficiency in the body and can thus, be prevented by taking in foods that contain high levels of it. Potassium helps those who incur heavy fluid loss by working with sodium to balance the body’s natural water levels. Foods that contain high amounts include meats (poultry and fish), fresh apricots, avocado, bananas, cantaloupe, honeydew, kiwi, lima beans, milk, oranges and orange juice, potatoes, prunes, spinach, tomatoes, vegetable juice and winter squash. I like bananas because not only are they super tasty, but they’re easy to carry and high in carbs which your body needs to fuel itself during a workout.

Just be careful, too much potassium can be unhealthy so try not to go nuts…or bananas. Shoot.
