The K2 Extreme: It’s Baaaaaack…
By Adam Soldinger • Nov 13th, 2008 • Category: Features, Gear, Lead StoryBack in the late 80’s, when Nevica jackets and sherpa hats were still the hot new look, K2 released a ski that made all the difference in the world. Maybe it was just the timing since it was the first pair that I was good enough to ride really hard, but the Extreme has lived in my memory as a symbol of skiing manhood. That simple black design with the classic mechanical “K2″ symbol that you’d find on all their skis from the 5500 to the MSL…it was the first time I ever understood what a high-performance ski was supposed to do.
Well, the Extreme soon went the way of the dodo as technology improved and the K2 brand continued to evolve, but they’ve finally brought them back for 2009. This time, however, you won’t find a 90-degree sidewall and sizes up and over 200 cm. This version is a twin tip for play time in the park and riding switch, but they were nice enough to keep the old graphics, even the colorful base design. Oh, and I hear they’re still pretty good skis…
