“Black Mags” – The Cool Kids

By Adam Soldinger • Feb 19th, 2009 • Category: Song of the Day, The Wire

No…it’s not 1985 all over again. This breath of fresh air is a rap group out of Chicago and Detroit who, I can safely say, are one of the few positives to come out of MySpace. The duo actually met when one found a beat on MySpace that the other had produced and the two eventually hooked up for a recording session that spawned The Cool Kids. Quite obviously influenced by old school hip hop from the 80’s and early 90’s such as Public Enemy, KRS-One, Eric B. & Rakim, De La Soul and Tribe, among others, these guys are a welcome addition to a hip hop scene that has lost its way.

And what’s more…they’re philanthropists. On February 4th, the Cool Kids visited a neighborhood in Chicago, Illinois called Bridgeport. They helped raise money for Holden School and threw a concert for one of the 8th grade students that’s close to them and will most likely continue to fund raise for needy schools.

Enjoy…
