“Charles (The Red One)” – Magic Weapon
By Adam Soldinger • Feb 18th, 2009 • Category: Song of the Day, The WireThere seems to be a constant influx of talented Canadians making their mark in the music scene these days. Not that this is anything unusual. Our neighbors up north are responsible for bringing us bands like Arcade Fire, Hot Hot Heat, and Broken Social Scene, and even spawned some great classic rock outfits such as The Guess Who, The Band and Bachman-Turner Overdrive.
But recently there’s been a growing sense that something closer to a movement is going on with the emergence of one of the indie music scene’s biggest hits over the past few years, Wolf Parade, and it’s many offspring, including Frog Eyes, Handsome Furs and Sunset Rubdown (who was recently featured here…“You Go On Ahead” – Sunset Rubdown).
It’s no surprise then, that one of the newest additions to the Montreal scene, known as Magic Weapon, is a side-project of Sunset Rubdown drummer, Jordan Robson-Cramer. Their sound is a bit more technical and math rock-y (is that a word?) than their cohorts but it still comes with that big emotional roller coaster that these guys all seem to be able to bring to their songwriting. They’ve only release two EP’s, the latest of which is available for a whopping $6 CAD (um, that’s less than $5 US!!!) on the Villa Villa Nola website.
Here’s one of my favorite tracks…you gotta be patient for the payoff…
