Top 10 Hollywood Ski/Snowboard Movies: #1 – Better Off Dead (1985)

Lane Meyer

That’s right…just one year after playing Anthony Michael Hall’s geeky underling in “Sixteen Candles” and almost FIVE years before Lloyd Dobler showed up in “Say Anything”, John Cusack graced us with Lane Meyer, everyone’s favorite lovesick ski bum. After losing his girlfriend Beth to the high school ski team captain, Roy Stalin, Lane fights to win her back by racing him down the dreaded K-12 all while dealing with a variety of ridiculous family crisis, his crazy next door neighbors and a new French exchange student.

One of the reasons I give this movie top billing is that every single scene is memorable. Whether is the dancing cheeseburger, the absurdly 80’s date with Monique, Lane’s younger brother’s obsession with trashy women, the Asian duo addicted to Howard Cosell and of course, the paperboy, the movie is filled with songs, quotes and characters that have all stood the test of time.

Some of the most memorable quotes? Let’s see…

“I want my two dollars!”
“Go that way…really fast. If something gets in your way…turn.”
“This is pure snow! Do you have any idea what the street value of this mountain is?”
“And to drink…Peru!”
“Now that’s a real shame when folks be throwin’ away a perfectly good white boy like that.” (my personal favorite)

Anyone else got a line to throw into the mix?
